ERC Starting Grant 2027: deadline, eligibility and funding

ERC-2027-STG is open. It supports researchers building an independent frontier-research programme, with up to €1.5 million over five years. The deadline is 14 October 2026 at 17:00 Brussels time.[1]

ERC-2027-STG at a glance

The call opened on 22 July 2026. The adopted Work Programme gives an indicative budget of €594 million and estimates approximately 373 grants; these are programme planning figures, not guarantees for any panel or applicant.[3]

Eligibility: the 2027 PhD window

For the 2027 Starting Grant, the standard eligibility window is based on the date of the successful PhD defence, not merely the diploma issue date. The official call states that this date must fall between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2026, inclusive.[1]

• You hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree by the call deadline.
• Your successful defence date falls inside the standard 2017–2026 window, or you can document an allowed extension.
• You have evidence of potential research independence.
• You have not previously held the same ERC grant type; other prior-grant and resubmission restrictions are checked separately.

Documented extensions can apply for circumstances defined in the Work Programme, including certain parental leave, illness, clinical training, national service, disasters, asylum or violence-related interruptions.[2][3] Do not estimate an extension informally: calculate it from the official rule and retain evidence.

Nationality and host institution are different tests

Researchers of any nationality may apply. However, the funded project must be hosted by an eligible public or private research organisation in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe associated country.[2]

You do not necessarily have to be employed by the host institution when submitting, but the institution must support the application and provide the required binding commitment. A researcher currently outside Europe can therefore apply by arranging an eligible European host and, if successful, relocating under the grant conditions.[1][2]

This distinction matters for international applicants: your nationality may be eligible while your current institution is not an eligible host. Verify the host country’s current Horizon Europe association status instead of assuming eligibility from geography alone.

How much funding is available?

The ERC page also states that the grant can cover up to 100% of eligible direct research costs plus a 25% contribution toward indirect costs.[2] Requested amounts remain subject to evaluation; a formal ceiling is not an entitlement.

Is ERC Starting Grant the right instrument?

ERC Starting Grants are bottom-up: applications may come from any field of research, including AI, health, education or interdisciplinary deep tech.[2] But the evaluation is built around frontier-research excellence and the Principal Investigator’s capacity for independence—not around startup traction, market entry or product deployment.

Practical Go/No-Go before investing in a proposal

1. Confirm the defence date. Obtain the certificate or institutional confirmation now.
2. Check restrictions. Review prior ERC submissions, grants and the exact 2027 resubmission rules.
3. Secure a host. Confirm institutional support, independence conditions and the support letter process.
4. Test scientific fit. Write the central research question and explain why it is frontier research, not routine development.
5. Build backwards from 14 October. Reserve time for host approval and external review before the portal deadline.
