EIC Accelerator 2026: application, eligibility and deadlines
The EIC Accelerator is the European Innovation Council's flagship programme for start-ups and SMEs that want to develop and scale up innovations at TRL 6–8. This article summarises who can apply, what you can get and when — every figure verified against the official EIC Accelerator page on 6 August 2026.
Who can apply
According to the official page, applicants must be established in an EU Member State or a country associated to Horizon Europe. Eligible applicants are:
- Single start-ups and SMEs (including spin-outs) with the ambition to scale up.
- Individuals or legal entities intending to set up an SME or a mid-cap.
- Small mid-caps (up to 499 employees) that need rapid scale-up of TRL 9 activity — but mid-caps can apply for the investment component only.
You may submit only one application at a time; additional applications are possible after receiving the result of the original submission.
The TRL 6–8 requirement
The grant component funds innovation activities at TRL 6 to 8, to be completed within 24 months. Grant-only support is available for start-ups and SMEs with capacity to scale up — and it is provided only once during the Horizon Europe 2021–2027 period.
You should already have a working prototype demonstrated in a relevant environment (TRL 6) and be moving towards a qualified system (TRL 8). Pure research or ideas at TRL 1–5 are not what this grant funds.

The 2026 budget is €414 million for the EIC Accelerator Open (any field of technology) and €220 million for the EIC Accelerator Challenges (pre-defined topics).
Funding rate: avoid the wrong shortcut
The grant component is presented as a lump sum below €2.5 million, alongside a possible €1–10 million investment component. Do not treat a generic “70% funding rate” as a universal answer for every EIC Accelerator application: use the current Work Programme, the selected component and the official lump-sum budget instructions when building the proposal budget.

Geography and the UK rule
- EU and Horizon Europe associated countries: full eligibility for grant, investment or blended finance.
- United Kingdom: can only apply for the grant-only scheme.
- Third countries: applicants may relocate their company to become eligible — this must be done before submitting the full application (Step 2).

Full proposals are batched for evaluation at 17:00 Brussels time on:

Short proposals can be submitted at any time and are batched every first Tuesday of the month at 17:00 Brussels time.
Action now: if targeting the 4 November batch, confirm the submission route and portal instructions on the official EIC page before investing further drafting time.
The application process in four steps
- Short proposal — a 12-page form, a pitch deck (up to 10 slides) and a 3-minute video. Evaluated remotely by 4 experts; feedback in approximately 4–6 weeks.
- Full proposal — a 20-page form plus implementation plan, financial information, letters of intent, freedom-to-operate analysis and video pitch. Results within approximately 8–9 weeks.
- Interview with the EIC Jury — the top-ranked proposals (2.5× the available grant budget) are invited; results within 2–3 weeks.
- Sign the grant, start due diligence — grant agreement first; the investment component is decided within 2–6 months after due diligence.
Applications reaching the minimum threshold of 13/15 at the remote stage — or recommended by the jury but not selected — can receive a Seal of Excellence to help secure funding elsewhere.
